When we are sorry about something that we did (or didn’t do) in the past, we say that we regret doing it (or regret not doing it). For example:
✓ One day you’ll regret treating me that way!
Un giorno ti pentirai di avermi trattato così!
✓ She regrets not going to university.
Rimpiange di non aver fatto l’università.
We use regret with an infinitive in certain expressions, to say that we are sorry to mention a given situation. For example:
✓ I regret to say that the patient’s condition has worsened.
Mi dispiace dover dire che le condizioni del paziente sono peggiorate.
✓ We regret to inform you that your application has been rejected.
