regret doing something
regret to have done something
I’d rather regret doing something than not doing something.
- James Hetfield
✓ I regret telling her about my problems.
✗ I *regret to have told* her about my problems.
When we are sorry about something that we did (or didn’t do) in the past, we say that we regret doing it or regret not doing it. For example:
✓ One day you’ll regret treating me that way!
✓ She regrets not going to university.
Rimpiange di non aver fatto l’università.
We use regret with an infinitive in certain expressions, to say that we are sorry to mention a given situation. For example:
✓ I regret to say that the patient’s condition has worsened.
✓ We regret to inform you that your application has been rejected.
