worth doing
worth to do
Truth is everybody is going to hurt you; you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for.
La verità è che tutti ti faranno male; devi solamente trovare quelli per i quali vale la pena di soffrire.
– Bob Marley
✓ It’s a terrible film. It certainly isn’t worth going to the cinema to see it.
✗ It’s a terrible film. It certainly isn’t worth *to go* to the cinema to see it.
E’ un film pessimo. Sicuramente non vale la pena andare al cinema a vederlo.
The expression be worth on its own translates the Italian verb valere. For example:
✓ This watch is worth a thousand pounds.
Questo orologio vale mille sterline.
If we add a gerund, for example worth + doing, it translates the Italian expression vale la pena (di) fare. For example:
✓ My phone isn’t worth repairing.
✗ My phone isn’t worth *to repair*.
Non vale la pena riparare il mio telefonino.
✓ It might be worth talking to your doctor.
Forse vale la pena di parlare con il tuo medico.
